Anthropic steps into defence and opens up how models connect

On 7 November, Anthropic announced a tie-up with Palantir and AWS to put Claude in the hands of US defence and intelligence agencies. A company that built its name on safety entering that field drew argument both ways.

On the 22nd, Amazon invested a further $4 billion, with AWS becoming Anthropic's primary training partner.

    Anthropic announced a partnership with Palantir Technologies and AWS to give US intelligence and defense agencies access to the Claude 3 and 3.5 model families inside the Palantir AI Platform. Claude was made available in Palantir's Impact Level 6 (IL6) environment, accredited for national security data up to the "secret" classification. Intended uses included processing large volumes of data, surfacing patterns and trends, and streamlining document review to support decisions under time pressure. The move drew debate at the time over a safety-focused company entering military and intelligence work.

    Amazon invests $4 billion more; AWS becomes primary training partner

    Amazon announced an additional $4 billion investment in Anthropic, bringing its total to $8 billion while remaining a minority investor. AWS became not just Anthropic's primary cloud provider but its primary training partner, with Anthropic working alongside AWS's Annapurna Labs to optimize Trainium accelerators — down to writing low-level kernels and contributing to the AWS Neuron software stack — in what both framed as an integrated stack from silicon to software. Claude's use through Amazon Bedrock had also spread, with Pfizer, Intuit, Perplexity, and the European Parliament named among customers.

    Anthropic open-sources the Model Context Protocol

    Anthropic introduced the Model Context Protocol (MCP) as an open standard for secure, two-way connections between AI tools and data sources, replacing per-model, per-tool custom integrations with one specification. The release covered the spec and SDKs, local MCP server support in Claude Desktop, and an open-source repository of prebuilt servers for Google Drive, Slack, GitHub, Git, Postgres, and Puppeteer. Block and Apollo were named as early adopters, along with the developer tool companies Zed, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph. Anthropic gave away a connection layer that could have been kept as a competitive moat.
