OpenAI Five falls short against professionals on the big stage

On 23 August, OpenAI Five lost to professional teams at The International, the Dota 2 world championship, dropping both matches on the 22nd and the 23rd.

It had beaten strong human teams since June — but under conditions that limited the pool of heroes and more besides. On the real stage it came up short.

OpenAI Five loses to pros at The International

OpenAI Five faced top professionals at The International 2018, the Dota 2 world championship in Vancouver, and lost both of its two games. The first game was against paiN Gaming, one of the top 18 teams in the world, and the second against a team of renowned Chinese players; in both, OpenAI Five maintained a good chance of winning for the first 20-35 minutes. Played under substantially relaxed restrictions, the public matches were an early instance of an AI competing against professionals on a major esports stage.
