Anthropic claims the top with Claude 3, Microsoft hires a team whole

On 4 March, Anthropic announced Claude 3 in three sizes — Opus, Sonnet and Haiku — and said Opus beat GPT-4 on most evaluations. Benchmarks aside, a rival lab claiming to have passed OpenAI's best model drew attention.

On the 19th, Microsoft brought in Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Inflection AI, as CEO of a newly formed Microsoft AI, with much of Inflection's staff moving across with him. It was read as taking on a team and its people without buying the company.

On the 18th, NVIDIA announced Blackwell, its next generation of GPUs. Demand for AI silicon held up.

    The Claude 3 family arrives: Opus, Sonnet, Haiku

    Anthropic introduced the three-model Claude 3 family: Opus at the top, Sonnet balancing capability and speed, and Haiku as the fastest and most compact — a pick-by-need lineup that split one generation into three tiers by capability and speed, released together. Anthropic said Opus outperformed rivals on most common benchmarks including MMLU, GPQA, and GSM8K, the first generation it claimed beat GPT-4. All three models handled image input, reading photos, charts, graphs, and technical diagrams. Opus and Sonnet shipped at announcement on the API and claude.ai, with the API generally available in 159 countries; Haiku followed later.

    European Parliament adopts the AI Act

    The European Parliament adopted the AI Act by 523 votes to 46, turning the political agreement of December 2023 into settled text: obligations scaled to risk, a list of prohibited uses, duties for general-purpose AI models, and fines of up to 7% of global turnover. It was the first comprehensive AI law anywhere to pass a legislature.

    Mustafa Suleyman joins Microsoft as CEO of Microsoft AI

    Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind and Inflection AI, joined Microsoft as CEO of a newly formed division, Microsoft AI, overseeing consumer AI products and research including Copilot, Bing, and Edge. Inflection co-founder Karén Simonyan joined as chief scientist, and much of Inflection's staff moved with them. The hire was seen as strengthening Microsoft's in-house AI capabilities alongside its reliance on OpenAI.
