The European Parliament adopted the AI Act by 523 votes to 46, turning the political agreement of December 2023 into settled text: obligations scaled to risk, a list of prohibited uses, duties for general-purpose AI models, and fines of up to 7% of global turnover. It was the first comprehensive AI law anywhere to pass a legislature.

Twenty days after publication in the Official Journal on 12 July, the AI Act entered into force. Its provisions apply in stages: the prohibitions after six months, the obligations for general-purpose AI models after twelve.
