Judge Amit Mehta issued remedies in response to his August 2024 finding that Google held an illegal monopoly in search. He declined to order the divestiture of Chrome that the Justice Department had sought, and rejected a conditional divestiture of Android, writing that "plaintiffs overreached in seeking forced divesture of these key assets, which Google did not use to effect any illegal restraints." He did bar Google from entering or maintaining exclusive contracts over the distribution of its search engine and Chrome, ending deals that made it the sole default, and ordered Google to make some of the data behind its search engine available to "qualified competitors." Notably, the emergence of generative AI as a nascent competitive threat to search shaped how the remedies were designed. Google's stock rose on the ruling.
