GitHub, a Microsoft subsidiary, made GitHub Copilot, its AI coding assistant built on OpenAI Codex, generally available. Pricing was set at $10 per month or $100 per year, free for verified students and maintainers of popular open source projects. GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke revealed that during a technical preview joined by more than 1.2 million developers, Copilot wrote nearly 40% of the code in files where it was enabled in popular languages like Python. It was the first mass-market commercial product powered by OpenAI's language model technology.
